Resolve to Find a Mentor in 2018

While finding a mentor may not be at the top of your new year’s resolutions list, there are plenty of reasons to make mentorship a priority – from advancing your career and networking to supporting a career change. In honor of National Mentoring Month, we’ve outlined a few tips to help you find a mentor in 2018.

How can you find a mentor? First, check with your supervisor or HR department to see if you can participate in a formal mentorship program through your employer. You may also benefit from having multiple mentors some of which you will need to connect with on your own. Take a look at this advice on how best to find and keep a mentor.

Think outside the box. Don’t think that a mentor has to be ‘you,’ five years on. Sometimes that’s the case, but unconventional mentors can be just as valuable. Think about people you admire for qualities that can help boost your career. There are some great examples here of how you can find a mentor that might not be so obvious.

Find a mentor during your first year as a faculty member. Having a mentor during your first year as a faculty member can be invaluable, as you’re able to learn from someone who’s been there before you and navigated the sometimes-rocky path.

Happy national mentoring month and good luck!
